Despite a short conversion period and working in the middle of the security area, the Store Makers were able to demonstrate their expertise as global duty-free specialists.

For Setur, which was the first duty-free operator in Turkey in 1965 and is now part of the Koç Group, Cologne/Bonn Airport is the first airport location in Europe.

"With this investment in Europe, we are initiating the globalisation step of our growth strategy. In the coming years, we want to expand the potential of Cologne/Bonn Airport and create value for all stakeholders with our customer-orientated service philosophy."

Experience market flair at the airport

Terminal 1 is visually reminiscent of a market hall. The 900 m² area consists of three areas that are perfectly staged and visually connected. This is achieved by the spacious promenade and a pergola, which reinforces the open impression. The central element and absolute eye-catcher is a green display in the centre with all the flight information. The ceiling element is part of the staging and blurs the boundaries between airport and retail.

Another important aspect of the design was the flexible furnishings, which allow the product displays to be changed quickly and easily. To this end, some of the furniture is on castors, which can be wheeled out during the day for a pleasant shopping experience and pushed back into the shop after closing time. This makes it possible to customise the display area. Highlight and promotion points in the aisles attract the attention of passengers and draw them to the areas. Numerous digital themes will also be found in the new terminal in future, such as Click & Collect stations and self-checkout tills.

The design of Terminal 2 creates a marketplace atmosphere on the almost 600 m² area: the open design with numerous seating areas and offers to linger creates a high quality of stay, which contributes to deceleration. At the same time, the concept creates an ideal bridge between the catering offer, the shopping experience and the waiting time until departure. The airport has added a green wall and a large LED wall to the retail area for customised display. The furniture can also be used flexibly here, for example a mobile tasting bar in the spirits department.

A 50 m² event area is also planned within the sales area. The horizontal textile shutters for night-time closing are also a novelty: The lockable security system is pulled out of the furniture after closing time and closes off the sales area, eliminating the need for disruptive façade elements.

"The best of the neighbourhood"

A key element of the concept development was to make the regionality of the Cologne/Bonn location tangible. The umdasch designers therefore integrated both traditional Cologne and Bonn elements. The "Cologne bridge green" - the typical colour of Cologne's Rhine bridges - was taken up in the concept as the basic colour for the façade design.

This is complemented by pink blossoms suspended from the ceiling as a reference to the annual cherry blossom in Bonn's historic city centre. In addition to the famous composer Beethoven, whose birthplace is Bonn, the Cologne carnival and the "Cologne dialect" are also thematised in the design. In this way, the mentality of the Rhineland is made ideally tangible at the airport. Setur also favours regional products, while at the same time offering a wide variety of brands. This creates a modern mix of local and international product ranges.

The topic of sustainability was considered holistically during the development of the concept. It is not only reflected in the materials used or the variable furniture in terms of eco-design, but also in the local planning, furniture production in Europe, the use of a local network of craftsmen and much more. The flooring used is low-emission and the chipboard was made entirely from residual wood material. It was also important to make optimum use of the existing building fabric and use as little new material as possible. The archways and frames were therefore retained and clad, while the ceiling frame remained unchanged.

Airports of Tomorrow

The eighth edition of inSites is dedicated to the airport of tomorrow. It deals with the question of what retail at the airport of the future must look like in order to counteract existing developments and is dedicated to current trends that travel retailers should address.
